The most common gum disease is gingivitis, a mild infection of the gums caused by bacteria. It’s often painless, but the most visible symptoms are bleeding gums when you brush your teeth, or bad breath.
Gingivitis can be treated by improving your oral hygiene and having your teeth cleaned by a dental hygienist. If left untreated, gingivitis can develop into periodontitis, a more serious form of infection that affects the supporting structures of the teeth (gums, alveolar bone, cementum, etc.). Their deterioration leads to receding gums, dental instability and sometimes even tooth loss.
Most cases of gingivitis can be cured with regular, appropriate care and professional cleaning.
The treatment of periodontitis is much more complex. The aim is to restore the supporting structures of the teeth. The recommended treatment plan may vary according to the severity of the situation. It consists of eliminating bacteria and periodontal pockets.
